Honestly, mapping jealousy straightaway to insecurity helped a whole lot. Instead of going “my partner is with someone else, and I am jealous, full stop!”, it became “my partner is with someone else, and I am feeling insecure; how do I want to address it?”. Alerted me to the control I already had, and dispelled a lot of that jealously nonsense I kept hearing from other quarters.

Why does jealousy get prioritized over all other emotions? When you date someone (or marry them), you’re signing up for the ENORMOUS likelihood of emotional pain when you break up, because, as Dan Savage says, every relationship ends except for the one that doesn’t. We sign up for that pain willingly, even enthusiastically, but we hide from jealousy as if it might kill us.

Jealousy is the only emotion we organize our lives NEVER to expose us to. And for me, at least, what REALLY makes me jealous isn’t what my wife or lover does, it’s what she WANTS to do. When she does something, it makes me envious….

Sitting down with his girlfriend as you did? NFW. My heart was racing just thinking about it.
